Autumn may be imminent but the garden is not ready to sleep yet. Roses have burst into bloom, hollyhock still opening her buds morning by morning, a late lavender still calls out the last lingering bees and hoverflies. Oddly, the violet, primrose and flowering quince are blossoming too as if not quite sure which season we are transitioning to. The garden birds are becoming territorial, wrens scolds from the hedge as robin sings from the topmost branch, duetting with the robin on the chimney pot. Tits, dunnocks, chaffinch, greenfinch and goldfinch have all returned filling the garden with song. Sweetpeas are slowly fading, and succumbing to greenfly, a little bird has taken up residence in the tangle of flowers. The chickens stay close looking for tasty morsels as we weed…
